Krav Maga Southport — Total Combat Martial Arts

Krav Maga for Beginners: Your Complete Starter Guide

Can I do Krav Maga with no experience?

Yes — and most people who walk through our doors in Southport have never trained in anything before. Krav Maga was specifically designed to teach effective self-defence to ordinary people quickly, so the whole system assumes you are starting from scratch. You do not need any background in martial arts, fighting or even regular exercise. You simply need to turn up willing to learn.

What your first class looks like

A typical beginner session follows a clear, friendly structure. You will start with a warm-up to get moving and loosen up. From there a coach introduces a technique — perhaps a basic strike or an escape from a grab — breaking it down step by step before you try it slowly with a partner. You will drill it, build up speed and power as you get comfortable, and finish feeling like you have genuinely learned something. There is no forced sparring and no expectation that you already know how to fight. Everything moves at a pace you can handle.

Do I need to be fit?

No. You train at your own level from day one, take breaks when you need them, and let your fitness build naturally as you go. Krav Maga is not about being the strongest or fittest person in the room — it is about leverage, timing, targeting and instinct. Plenty of our members arrived feeling out of shape and found that the training itself got them fitter, week by week.

What to wear and bring

For your first few classes, comfortable sportswear and a pair of trainers are all you need — a t-shirt, plus shorts or joggers. Bring a bottle of water and, if you like, a small towel. There is no special uniform required to start, and we will let you know if you need anything else as you progress. You can see class times on the timetable.

Will I get hurt?

Safety is built into how we teach. Techniques are introduced slowly and controlled at all times, you progress only as fast as you are comfortable, and partner work is always consent-based and closely supervised by a coach. Krav Maga deals with serious subject matter, but the learning environment is careful and supportive. If you have specific concerns — an old injury, for example — just tell a coach and we will adapt. Our FAQ covers safety in more detail.

How quickly will I learn useful skills?

Faster than you might expect. Because Krav Maga is built on instinctive movement rather than long choreographed forms, beginners typically pick up genuinely usable defences within their first few weeks. You will not have to wait years to feel more capable — even your very first session leaves you with something practical. Feeling nervous? You're completely normal

Almost everyone feels nervous before their first class — walking into a new place, not knowing anyone, trying something unfamiliar. Our coaches and members know that feeling well, which is exactly why the culture here is welcoming rather than intimidating. Come as you are; you will be in good company. And because classes run year-round, including the school holidays, you can start whenever suits you without waiting for a new term.

Your next step
